Out Of The Earth: The Art Of Eli John
'All my life I have been strangely, vividly conscious of another region-not far removed from our own world in one sense, yet wholly different in kind" -Algernon Blackwood
Eli John is an artist and illustrator who lives and works from under an ancient ash tree in the Pendle Forest, Witch Country, Lancashire. This melancholy landscape is a worthy setting as John's work is primarily inspired by Ghost Stories, Supernatural and Gothic Literature, llustrating work by authors such as M R James, Arthur Machen, Sheridan Le Fanu and Algernon Blackwood. Less interested in the art of blood and guts, John’s work searches out the sublime and sensual inherent in these works, inspired more by psychological landscapes shaped by obsession, fatalism, anxiety and fear. He was produced illustration work for Centipede Press, Hellebore Zine and The Arthur Machen Journal ‘Faunus’. His online gallery and shop can be found at www.borderlandpress.bigcartel.com
John is also the owner of Borderland Books, home to a number of familiar ghosts and a few unfamiliar, which move in wraith-like on the moorland fog.
